"Spoiling the dignity and repose of the tea party" has been a familiar expression in my family for counter-cultural behaviour for as long as I can remember.
And now I know where it comes from.

Not discipline. Not self-sacrificing. Never "for your own good". How would it be if the members of a family treated each other as autonomous, rational and well-intentioned people?

Shouldn't it be "disturb[ing]"?
Well, yes, but my family metamorphosed it into "spoil[ing]". I was still delighted to discover its origin :)
